Sometimes special people in our world, get overlooked, and I think, one of the top ones would be nurses. Nurses put in so much effort to make our time in the hospital easy, and still, they do not get the recognition that they deserve. And this is why it is important to have a whole day dedicated to them.
International Nurses Day is held on the 12th of May, as a reminder of all the hard work they demonstrate. Unlike other individual days, on Nurses Day, there is nothing you can really do to celebrate or commemorate. Just the knowledge that they have a day dedicated to them is enough.
When people go seeking a job, usually, being a nurse is a heavily rejected option. When you ask kids what they want to be when they are older, nurses don’t even appear in the top ten. And if kids do want to be a nurse, they will probably change their minds later, seeing as the majority of kids don’t take on their dream job. Most Australians think that nurses are underpaid and should get a higher salary in the future.
You may have heard of protests for nurses. Well, these usually relate back to how much they are being paid. In the USA, nurses are already going on strike, however, in Australia, things are a little different. No strikes have been carried out recently, but multiple strikes have been planned. Can you imagine how this would affect our communities? With no nurses in hospitals, when sickness came upon you, you would have to travel further away to find a hospital.
The first-ever female nurse was Florence Nightingale. Her birthday is on the 12th of May, just the same as when International Nurses Day is celebrated. Obviously not a coincidence there. Florence Nightingale is nicknamed the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ because she would walk among the beds, checking on the wounded men in war.
She trained as a nurse in the Crimean War, and helped soldiers with possibly fatal injuries recover. Today, there is even an award ceremony held about her, to recognise budding nurses from our generation. Florence Nightingale will forever be known as a great nurse in history.
The most important thing to remember about International Nurses Day is the hard work nurses demonstrate. And I’m not going to tell you to do anything on May 12th, just remember this article and consider the work of nurses.
Because nothing about them should be forgotten.
