Thump, thump, thump. That is the sound of the dancers’ shoes hitting the ground in perfect rhythm. I see hundreds of people, looking up at the stage, waiting for the bagpipes to commence.
Highland dancing is an old dance that was created in Scotland, in the 19th and 20th centuries. Highland dance is one of the oldest types of dance and it’s still going today.
In Highland dance, we have: competitions, lessons, exams and workshops. You need to have great arm and leg strength to complete a dance. At the competitions, you dance, eat and watch all day. Some of the dances we do include the Hornpipe, Fling, Swords, Seann Truibhas and Jig.

Highland dancing is not just for girls; boys can take part too. But centuries ago, highland dancing was only performed by boys and young men.
On 21st March I went to the Lithgow Thistle Highland Dancing competition. I won lots of medals and trophies for all of my dances!
I got 3rd in the fling, 1st in the swords, 2nd in the Seann Truibhas, 2nd in the Laddie, 1st in the Jig, 1st in the Hornpipe and 1st in the Barracks.
Out of all of these dances, the Hornpipe is my favourite because you get to jump a lot!
