What a fantastic game on Monday 31st of July!
The Matildas smashed our rivals, Canada, in the FIFA WWC, to make it through to the round of 16.
The start of the game was tense. But all of that changed when the Matildas got motivated and Hayley Raso scored a great cross-in from Steph Catley in the 8th minute and 46 seconds of the game.
After that, the Matildas were unstoppable!
Could Canada make a comeback? Well, I didn’t think so when our second goal was scored by Haley Raso again!
It was getting hot, when our Australian fans started screaming and chanting for a third goal. And did they get it? YESS! What a wonderful, but confusing goal from Mary Fowler. A cross-in from Catlin Foord, then a touch onto the side of the goal leads across the white line of the Canadian goal. Paused for a moment, but then screams shot through the stadium!
Canada was slowing down a bit but still pushing. As the matildas entered the Canadian box again, player number 17, Jessie Fleming, stepped on Catrina Gorry’s foot and the REF called it a penalty after multiple VAR checks.
The pressure was on Steph Catley as she would be taking the penalty. Silence rose in the stadium as Steph Catley focused and took the penalty…. IT’S ANOTHER GOAL for Australia, making it 4-0.
The crowd in the stadium was like a stampede of every animal who could ever know. No words were understood under this screaming, crying and chanting.
As the final whistle blew to announce the end of the game, all Matilda fans shot from their seats and rose in joy and happiness, for the Matildas were on the top of their group and were on to the round of 16.
Unfortunately, for Canada, it was game over for them and they are going home back to their families.
But what an amazing night for Australia and all we have to do now is win the world cup!
C’mon the Tillies, let’s win this!!
