The ground shook as the crowd roared for first place, hats flying in the air, then second pushed in and won the under nines race. That’s what it was like at Hilltop Road Cross Country.
Cross country is a race where people compete with each other doing three or four laps on the school playground. If you come first to fourth place you make it to Zone, and maybe even regionals, state and national competitions. If you win nationals you may get medals, money and team points for our houses.
Many people from our school made it to Zone but the top three places were Ibrahim in Year 3, George in Year 5 and Johnny in Year 6. The only person in our school to make it to regionals was Ibrahim.
Cross country zone was held at Greystanes Sport Ground on Bolare Avenue. Cross country is an opportunity to test our long distance running.
“It felt great to represent our school because I love running,” said George.
Out of everyone at Zone he had made it to 12th place.
In a Press Gang interview, we asked HRPS Principal, Ms See, what the point of cross country is. She told us, it’s about fun, fitness, spirit, and competitiveness. “It’s about learning about being passionate towards something you might not know that you love doing resilience, having fun,” she added.
Ms Lavery, Stage 3 AP, said cross country is about more than running. “It’s also about building that school spirit and having fun with your friends.”
