3…..2…1…. Kick the ball to the goal. At GEPS the boys dominate the soccer field. It’s just the boys who play soccer. But what about the girls?
We have a small soccer field at GEPS. Stage 2 play soccer at recess, Stage 3 plays at lunch. This means Stage 2 and 3 don’t argue about the space and Stage 2 are not playing with bigger students. But still only the boys play, the girls don’t. The boys dominate the playing field and sometimes the boys don’t let the girls play.
We surveyed 23 girls to find out how they feel about soccer. From our results, nine girls said yes the would like to play, six of them said maybe, and eight didn’t want to play girls’ soccer. This survey tells us that most girls are keen or interested in joining girls’ soccer.
Taliha A said, “I like soccer because my dad and brother play soccer. I like how I can pass the ball to my friends.”
Asma M said, “Soccer can be a good exercise game to play. Sometimes I play soccer outside of school. I like kicking the ball high.’’
We interviewed Ms Salloum. She told us that the reason we don’t have a girls’ soccer team is not that girls can’t play, but that there are not enough girls who want to play. But in the future, it’s possible that there will be a girls’ soccer team – so, watch this space.
