Rook Out World: It’s Kegworth Chess Club

By Raph, Elijah & Rowan

Chess club is an amazing way to make friends, get better at chess and crush your friends.

If you win your game or if you are winning your game by points, Poyraz, our great chess teacher, will give you an award card. You can collect award cards and, if you collect up to 20  (then 40, then 60, then 80, then 100), you get a chess trophy!

Sometimes we have a chess tournament, and if you come 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, then you earn yourself a medal.

When you’re not playing in a tournament, you get to choose a friend to play against. If you beat our great chess teacher, which is pretty unlikely, you win 100 award cards. Only three students have ever beaten Poyraz, so it’s unlikely for you to win. Poyraz has at least 30 medals and at least 20 trophies. He’s been playing chess since he was five, so that’s like 30 years of chess!

Some people even become better than their parents when they practise with Poyraz.

If you want to join, just turn up at the learning hub on a Wednesday and Poyraz will give you an award card with signing up details on the back. You will usually get half an hour of lessons and half an hour of game time. That means that the chess club goes for a full hour.

Join Chess Club and play every Wednesday of your school career! Have fun and get a new hobby.
