No one likes to wake up early on a Sunday morning, but today members of Kegworth’s Junior and Senior Bands were excited to do so. I play the flute in Junior Band and this morning we got to participate in the Wilbur Sampson event at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF).

Junior Band and our conductor, Kate Whitton, gathered at The Concourse in Chatswood at 8am. I felt nervous as I knew I had to play two solos. I grew more and more butterflies in my stomach as we were escorted on to the stage.

Then the spotlight shone in our faces, and the audience watched our every move. We played three songs: Bugler’s Dream by Leo Arna, Lullaby by Tim Fisher and Power Rock (We Will Rock You and Another One Bites The Dust) by Queen, arranged by Michael Sweeney.

I was proud of myself and of everyone else in Junior Band. It was a long morning, but it was all worth it as we bowed and walked off the stage to the sound of applause.

Stephanie, a year 3 mum, said that that all the kids did an amazing job. “It was our first experience of a school music festival. Anthony had never performed in a formal setting and said that the environment was ‘rich like’ as it was his first time in a concert hall!.”

Although it was a competition, it is more important to have fun than it is to win, and luckily we had lots of fun! Cerys, a Sax player from year 3, said that she really enjoyed the performance. “It was a great experience,” she added.

As Junior band prepared to leave, members of Kegworth’s Senior band were arriving for their performance in the Robert McAnally event They played there pieces, Happy, Firework and Geronimo. They went on to win Bronze!

Music Committee President, Ali, a year 4 mum, said that all the Kegworth kids did well. “It was great to watch them perform,” she told the Kegworth Times.

Skye, who plays clarinet, said that she found the performance “nerve wracking,” while Isla, another clarinet player, said that she was “very proud” that senior band won Bronze.

Conductor Kate Whitton said that she was delighted by how well all the Kegworth kids performed. “I’m very proud,” she said. “All the children were very brave and professional.”
