Teachers Uncovered: John’s Extraordinary Fishing Skills

By Harper

Now if I saw this, I would skip to something more exciting like a dragon’s secret life, or a bandicoot robbing a bank. But trust me, John’s fishing is extraordinary.

He goes on a boat for a week straight. Could you do that?  Seven whole days on a boat.

John first started going out to the barrier reef over 10 years ago, his amazing skill to fish would astonish anyone. John only goes about twice a year, or “not enough” in his words.

The biggest thing he has caught was over 40 kgs, a Red Trevally to be exact. And of course, he lets them go. The main fish he catches are coral trout and red throat emperor fish. Sometimes he takes a couple of fish home to feed himself some freshly caught fish.

I think this is just such an amazing hobby, going to Queensland and getting on a boat with your mates, and fishing for a week. John would call it a very fun way of fishing, now he’s so far out that he doesn’t see any other boats.

One of the amazing things he enjoys is “the remoteness of the reef,” the feeling of just being out there in the middle of nowhere having no sense of the outside world but just feeling the waves gently rock the boat up and down. That’s why it’s one of his favourite things to do.
