Kegworth Legends Win Keep Australia Beautiful Award

Elena, Imogen, Olivia and Agnes aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty in Environmental Club. Day after day, they help Ms Radburn, their group leader (and stage 3 teacher) care for the Kegworth environment. And on the 12th of October, they were gifted with the award they deserve.
After 4 years of dedication to the Environmental Club, Elena, Imogen, Olivia and Agnes have been recognised for their ongoing service to our local community. The four students give up three lunchtimes a week, caring for Kegworth, and the community as a whole. From composting to reducing waste, these local heroes work hard every week with Ms Radburn to enrichen, enliven and encourage our local area.
They were awarded with the under 25’s Keep Australia Beautiful, NSW, Sustainable Cities Award. This award was not the one of ceremony, yet it was a key part. They were recognised for their hard work and dedication, and also the lasting impact they have had on our school.
It is an extra impressive achievement when you consider that this award was contested by anyone in NSW under 25 years of age, and Elena, Agnes, Olivia and Imogen are only Year 6 kids.
I asked Olivia and Elena about their experience:
What do you think of this award?
Olivia: We were all very grateful for this opportunity. I felt very proud because we were competing against high school and university students, and we were the only primary school students to make it to the finals.
How was the ceremony?
Elena: Everything was a very high standard, very formal and after our speech many people came to congratulate us and we were shuffled around to take photos with people like the Environment Minister and our judge. It was really great to be part of it.
I know you made a speech. How did that go?
Olivia: It was quite frightening doing the speech in front of everyone, we stumbled on our words a few times but overall it was pretty good.
Elena: At the start it was a bit overwhelming, standing in front of so many people, smiling. But to be honest, I think we nailed it.
After everything they have contributed, from Year 3 to Year 6, Elena, Imogen, Olivia and Agnes have set the bar very high here at Kegworth. We can’t wait to see what they do next.
