AI, also known as Artificial Intelligence, is the science of making machines that can think like humans. AI was made in the 1950s and today it is used by most people around the world. AI was made by two computer scientists Alan Turing and John Mcarthy. Five years later John Mcarthy named the computer program ‘AI’.
AI has gone through many years of changes and updates to eventually reach how intelligent it is today.
AI is one of our most advanced pieces of technology. It can use voice, fingerprint and facial recognition to make any platform safe and secure to use for everyone.
We conducted a survey of Stage 3 students at FDPS to find out what students think about AI. Based on the information we got from the survey, 57 per cent of FDPS Stage 3 students think that AI is worrying, with 73 per cent say-ing that they think AI is useful.
Let’s dig deeper into what children think about AI. Here are some of the reasons students are worried.
“AI is making humans more lazy and AI is biased.”
“Because in the future [AI] could potentially take over the world. They also have the power to take over peoples jobs.
“We don’t know what AI could do in the future.”
We interviewed Dr Matt Agnew, author of the kids’ book Is my phone reading my mind?, which explains AI. One of our questions was, do you think we should learn more about AI? Here’s what he said.
“I think to make sure people use AI correctly, safely and ethically, it comes down to education. I think AI should be a very important part of the curriculum. So I think you should absolutely learn how to use AI, learn how to use it safely and learn how to use it in a way that doesn’t hurt others.”
