Inside The New HRPS School Parliament

By Mohid & Mohammad

Did you know Student Parliament develops skills that kids like us can carry for the rest of our lives? Yes you heard me right! A little program in our school that gives life-long skills to students. It develops skills like public speaking, collaboration, teamwork, leadership and co-operation. It also develops students’ confidence and empowers student voices.

Using the preferential voting system, the leaders are elected. This is the same system that Australia uses when electing the government. The preferential voting system is a complex system that ensures no ties are apparent.

Each fortnight, our school leaders join together for the student parliament to discuss important topics such as muftis, athletics carnivals and other great events. Mrs Lavery and Ms Small support the student parliament and ensure everything moves smoothly.

“This is our first full year of running a Student Parliament at our school, and it has been great! It has been a fantastic way for students to be empowered and support the student voice through our school,” said Ms Lavery.

She continued. “Ms Small and I organise ways for students to have their voice heard and be empowered through our Student Parliament. I also organise the Year 5 leadership process that supports our amazing Year 5 students to try out for leadership positions.”

So, the student parliament is basically a mini parliament that uses the same voting system as the Australian Government (Preferential voting system), it teaches kids important skills, and on top of that, kids can learn more about how voting works. It’s also an amazing chance for a student’s voice to be heard and recognised.
