Three Ways the Kegworth Enviro Group Makes Our School Greener

What does your school do for the environment? Well, here at Kegworth we have an environmental group program, where kids can join in and work to help our environment in every way they can. They collect compost and recycling, plant more greenery in the gardens and help care for the worm farm. Recently, they have been participating in many competitions, dedicating their lunchtimes to improving our community. 

Here are three other ways the Kegworth Environmental Group helps our school become more environmentally friendly. 

The Enviro Bank Program

One thing they are taking part in is the Enviro Bank program. Every kid can take a netted orange sack home to fill up with ten cent bottles. You can get these bags from Kegworth, either from Ms Radburn (the enviro group leader) or from the Environmental Group themselves. This is then recycled, instead of going into landfill without being repurposed. 

Anyone is the Kegworth community can participate in this, and you can even get bottles and containers from family members or your neighbours. 

Recycling bread bags 

The Environmental Group are also entering into a competition where we wash out and donate all our used bread bags, to recycle and reuse. Some of the children go around to each class and collect the bags from children in every stage. 

Unfortunately the competition has already closed, so any you have at home now cannot be recycled in this program until next year, but hang on to them, the program will open again in

Reusable Cutlery In Every Classroom 

Ms Radburn, the leader of the Environmental Group, and a Year 5 & 6 teacher is very against using plastic or bamboo forks in any circumstance. “We are encouraging classroom teachers to ensure they have their own calico bag with a set of utensils inside,” She says, “From this point on, no one should be using plastic forks and spoons in Kegworth.” 

This means that when students get food from the canteen or forget their utensils at home, there are spares at school for them to use. 

Environmental Group takes place at lunchtimes and recesses, and students from years 3 – 6 can join. I would encourage you to take part, and even if you participate in other activities and cannot make it to any of the lunchtime clubs in Environmental Group, you can still help by supporting the group. 

And for those in Year 6, maybe you could start and environmental group at your high school!
