Jasmine Mills is a Classical Saxophonist, music teacher and Kegworth’s Band Conductor. Find out more about her in our exclusive interview.
Mia: What’s your favourite instrument to play?
Jasmine: Saxophone, because I’m quite good at it. I’ve been playing for a long, long time. It’s fun. It’s very diverse, so there are lots of sounds you can make. And saxophone music is, in my opinion, very exciting.
Mia: How long have you been playing Saxophone?
Jasmine: Well, I started when I was eight and I’m now 27.
Mia: Have you ever seen a saxophone being made?
Jasmine: No, actually I haven’t. The factories are in France and Japan, so I can’t just pop by.
Mia: I’m going to Japan!
Jasmine: Maybe you can go to the Yamaha or Yanagawa factories. You can pick your own saxophone from there too.
Mia: What advice would you give to kids who are keen to play an instrument?
Jasmine: My advice is just give it a go! Everyone starts off knowing nothing about music or instruments, so there’s no need to have learned anything beforehand! For the Kegworth junior band next year, you can pick from flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, Trombone and French Horn (all very cool instruments). Give them a Google and see what you like the sound of!
Mia: What is your favourite thing about being a music teacher/ conductor?
Jasmine: My favourite thing about being a music teacher and Conductor is seeing my students learn and grow week after week. It’s very rewarding getting a student from their first lesson, where they don’t know how to hold an instrument, to going onstage and performing a piece all by themselves!
