Five Dock Green Thumbs Share Their Gardening Tips
By Sian, Oliver & Eliana

Gardening Club is a before school club for FDPS children of all ages to experience the joy of gardening.
Mr Sharp built a passion for gardening at the age of five and was incredibly lucky as his parents also liked gardening.“I’ve loved it ever since,” he told us.
Mr Sharp decided to start gardening club because he thinks all children should have that opportunity.
At gardening club students cut flowers to make bunches, plant seeds and water plants. “There’s always plenty to do,” said Mr Sharp.
So what’s next for Gardening Club? We asked Mr Sharp.
“We’re thinking about making more signage, so other people can come through and identify the plants. I’m also thinking of growing more plants that we can use to make tea in the mornings,” he said.
“And later this year, I’m hoping to have a little shop so we can sell some of our produce.”
Gardening Club is an immersive and entertaining school activity for any students to see they like gardening, wonder what the experience is like, or even if you just have extra time before school!
Here are five gardening tips to get you started!
Use plant food in your soil
This boosts your plants growing speed and promotes healthy growth in the roots of your plants.
Start slowly, build your garden up in steps
Gardening is slow repeating process.
Increase pot size as plats grow
If the pot is not large enough, your plants will become root-bound and may experience stunned growth.
Look out for pests
Pests like bugs, snails and slugs can harm your plants.
Identify remove weeds
Weeds choke and smother other plants or cover the soil, leaving no room for them to thrive and breathe.
