Gardening Club: Feel The Calm

By Ava & Elise

Butterflies glide gracefully across the garden floor, waiting for curious children from the Five Dock Gardening Club to spread natural cheer and help the environment grow.

Everybody wants to know how Mr Sharp keeps the FDPS garden so beautiful. This is how it happens, Mr Sharp walks into the garden every day looking for dry soil to water. He uses worm wee, seaweed, fish liquid and fertiliser. This also gives children a chance to have fun in the garden and connect to nature.

There are lots of benefits to gardening clubs, such as peer-to-peer building social connections with older students and younger students.

According to ABC kids, when things get difficult, gardening is an opportunity for kids to figure out what happened and what they will do differently. ”When you get frustrated, going outside and lying on the grass can really calm you down, because nature does calm you,” Costa Georgiadis told the ABC.

So what are FDPS students saying about the Gardening Club?

“I love the gardening club because I love planting and drinking tea, such as mint, rosemary, lemon, blue flower, and lime tea,” said Annie, Year 4

“It’s really fun because you get to plant different plants and learn about things in the garden, and we also drink fresh homemade tea,” said Charlotte, Year 6

The Gardening Club is a great way to stay healthy. You can eat fruit and veggies, and don’t forget the mint tea, which also plays a critical part of Gardening Club. The garden helps people feel like they belong, and these people want to share the happiness and feel calm before a tough day of school.

Gardening Club happens every Friday at 8.30, so come and give it a shot.
