Year 5 Students Give Canberra A Camp Vote Of Approval
By Kendall, Josh, Sienna, Senna & Evelyn

On the 28th of April, Year 5 students took part in a 3-day camp in Canberra to learn about Canberra and the history of Australia. Some things that we visited were Questacon, the War Memorial and the Australian Institute of Sport.
The War Memorial
The first thing that we went to was the War Memorial. We learnt about World War aeroplanes and were told stories about soldiers and about their lives in the army.
We asked Year 5 students what they learned at the War Memorial.
“I loved it because the War Memorial really draws attention to Australia and everyone who has served and sacrificed for Australia.”
Questacon
Questacon is a fun-filled place for all ages that teaches science in an interactive way. The Freefall slide was a vertical drop, about seven metres tall.
Kendall rated the experience five out of five. “It felt like you were going to slip, but when you let go, and you were going down the slide, it felt like your heart jumped out of your chest,” she said.
The earthquake room is an experience when you’re in a house, and the room starts shaking like an earthquake. The window starts cracking, and the house outside begins to fall.
Australian Institute of Sport
We also visited the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), where we were able to have a look at the facilities that the athletes use. The first one we saw was the gymnastics gym, a massive room with lots of equipment such as
trampoline and the parallel bars. We noticed there was white powder everywhere. Our tour guide explained that this was because the athletes use chalk to grip the bars so they don’t slide off.
The AIS also has a 50m Olympic pool with lots of cool features. There is a viewing window into the pool where the coaches can observe the swimmers from under the water and correct their stroke. There are also multiple cameras in and out of the pool so swimmers and coaches can review swimming techniques.
Students also had a chance to try out some of the sports, such as cycling, basketball and soccer, on machines. It felt like the Olympics.
“I really loved snowboarding because it felt like you were on a rollercoaster,” said Ava.
