Dumpster Diving Possum

By Sienna T, Seren & Mason

Did you hear about the possum that went dumpster diving for kids’ unwanted lunch scraps?

This furry critter went into a kegworth bin looking for food overnight. The possum was in the bin because the bin lids were open. Since possums are nocturnal, he fell asleep in the bin. Kids came to school that morning and found him sleeping in the bin.

This story is not just about the possum, it’s about the wildlife that students interact with at kegworth. According to a Press Gang survey 81.5 per cent of students have seen wildlife in our school.

At Kegworth you can find lots of wildlife such as all types of birds, lizards, owls, possums, spiders, bugs, and of course, Binki the cat. Bikini belongs to a Kegworth neighbour and is a regular visiter.

“Binky brings love, caring, entertainment, cuddles, pats. She keeps the Ibis and the pigeons from classrooms and keeps the birds out, even if she does eat a few of them,” said Ms Weeks.

You can find wildlife whenever you’re in the playground, and every now and then you’ll also see it in our halls and classrooms, like that time a bird came through the door of Mr Toovey’s room.

We think our school is a nice place for wildlife, because we care for animals, and help them if they get stuck somewhere and have a lot of trees around.

We asked students and teachers to tell us about the wildlife they’ve seen.

“I see kookaburras, magpies, the occasional possum and ibis. Plenty of ibis.” Mr Ploughman.

“Once I saw a possum. It was in a tree, just outside of the playground,” Gus, Y6

“I have seen the IBUs, the pigeon. I’ve seen Binky, the cat. Oh, I’ve seen minor birds as well, and I think that is all the wildlife that I’ve seen,” Mr Verelle

So what happened to the possum that got stuck in the bin? So the possum got out when all the kids went to their classes in the morning. Mrs. Steven opened the bin and let the possum go and explore.

Even though Kegworth is a school, there is still a lot of wildlife around, so keep your eyes open and beware.
