Five Inclusive Playgrounds Coming To The Inner West

By Indie

Have you ever been to a Livvi’s Place playground? There is one in Drummoyne, if you haven’t been go check it out, there are loads of big slides and roundabouts that can seat wheelchairs.

The Inner West Council wants to make sure that all kids in the Inner West have somewhere to play, so they are going to build more inclusive playgrounds.

Here’s what Deputy Philippa Scott told the Kegworth Times: “The Inner West Council will build five more inclusive playgrounds across the Inner West Council area.

“We’ve agreed that there should be one in every council ward, so there will be one for Marrickville, one for Ashfield, one in Balmain, one in Leichhardt, and one in Stanmore.”

The council has obviously thought through what they need to do. Phillipa says that the playgrounds will be inclusive in a couple of ways. She says: “We want to make sure that there are wide paths and wide gates and ramps so that there aren’t any steps or fences in the way of someone getting into the playground.

“Once they’re in the playground, we want to make sure that the equipment is fun and interesting to use for someone who doesn’t climb or doesn’t like to climb.”

The playgrounds will also have sensory gardens. Philippa says: “That’s stuff that is fun to touch and feel and smell and look at, so that if you have a sensory impairment or a neurological condition or a physical condition, that means you can’t engage with the equipment, you can still have a fun time looking and feeling and smelling some fun, nice garden beds.”

The inner west council allocated $50,000 last year for consultation, planning, and design and $2 million this year for the building of inclusive playgrounds!
