The Lasting Impact Of The Women’s World Cup

Press Gang investigators find out how the Inner West Council plan to support women’s sport.

The crowds were insane, the viewing numbers were record breaking and the stadiums were packed with fans. This year, The Women’s World Cup was more popular than ever before.

Millions of people all around the world tuned in to every exciting game as the Matildas proved that girls can play soccer just as well as boys.

The Women’s World Cup has influenced many young girls into playing in their local football teams and has raised the popularity of football.

Women’s sport has changed so much in the past 20 years and with the help of the Inner West Council, state and federal government, things will just keep improving.

The IWC set up an office of sport around five years ago. The aim of it is to increase the participation of women and girls, but also for people with a disadvantaged background, people with disabilities, and people from refugee backgrounds that traditionally would be excluded from sport and haven’t had the chance to participate as much.

Since we don’t have enough space here, we don’t get new parks very often because we live in a very dense urban environment. So the IWC is starting to invest in improving the facilities that we do have so they can be used more often.

A vital role the council has played in the popularity of women’s sport is providing places to train and play.

“Have any of you played down on the Glover Street Ovals?” he asked us, then he revealed that he had initiated the plan to have the fields built and prepared for sports players and young kids alike.

“They were just old abandoned areas that were not used for sport at all” he said.

With space to train and play, the popularity of women’s sport can only go up hill from now on.
