Special Report: Pemulwuy Finish First At Cross Country

By Idris, Dorothy & Dannii

On the 2nd of May, we had our annual Darlo Cross Country. The sky was clear with no clouds in sight, going up to 21°C. As well as the weather being sunny, there was also a nice cool breeze.

We ran in Victoria Park, near Broadway shopping centre. It started at around 11:30 am, finishing at 1:30 pm, for 2 hours.

The children from years 2 – 6 ran approximately:

  • Years 2 – 3 (ages 7 – 9) ran 1.5km
  • Years 4 – 5 (ages 10) ran 1.5km
  • Years 5 – 6 (ages 11) ran 3km
  • Year 6 (ages 12 +) ran 3km

The students were nervous to commence the event, but felt excited during the race (some were too tired to run because of all the cheering). In total, around 20 – 40 kids ran each race, but in the last girls’ race, only had seven competitors.

We interviewed Darlo kids in the playground about Cross Country. Here’s what they said:

“I’ve been doing it for six years, because I’m in Year six, and it’s never really gotten old. It’s always fun to go out and race.”

“It was hard and boring – you have to run really far.”

“Cross Country was very fun. The best part was running.”

“It was really fun, I loved the running. The best part of the day was finishing my race and hanging out with my friends.”

“Everyone was very nice cheering for others.”

The top six participants would make it into the PSSA South Sydney Zone Cross Country.

The championships of each race for the DPS Cross Country were:

  • 7 – 9 yr old Girl Champion: Frida (P)
  • 7 – 9 yr old Boy Champion: Caspian (Y)
  • 10 yr old Girl Champion: Evie (T)
  • 10 yr old Boy Champion: Logan (P)
  • 11yr old Girl Champion: Helena (T)
  • 11 yr old Boy Champion: Hyuuga (Y)
  • 12 – 13 yr old Girl Champion: Sadie (P)
  • 12 – 13 yr old Boy Champion: Xavier (P)

And the winning house was… Pemulwuy!!!

A special thanks to the sports teacher, Brad who organised most of the event.
