Did you know In Australia, around 1 in 2 people will struggle with mental health problems in their lifetime?

According to Futurity around 8 million people die from mental health issues each year. Sometimes discrimination and stigma stop people from getting what their mental health needs and they suffer from mental health issues.

Mental Health Month takes place in the month of October. It  was started in 2010 and coordinated by WayAhead, the mental health association of NSW.

It’s a month to encourage people of all ages in NSW to care and think about the state of the state of their Mental health.

The Inner West has been doing many things  for Mental Health Month. In Newtown, for example, they are building a new LGBTQ+ center.

“[The Pride Center] Will support young people and will particularly have a mental health and social focus,” said Inner West Deputy Mayor, Phillipa Scott,

The IWC will also host Mental Health Month events in libraries.

The Deputy Mayor told us that she was impressed by the number of young people who care about mental health.

“You can do a bit of a check-in and see how your mental health is going, then you are setting them up for a future where, hopefully, their mental health is strong and robust and they can get through life’s challenges,” she said.
