A Guide To Rottnest Island

By Georgia

For those who don’t know Rottnest is a small island west of Perth, it takes 30 minutes to get there by boat from Fremantle North Port.

Rottnest or Rotto for short, is the home of the cutest little creatures called quokkas! Now if you ever visit or have visited Rotto, you should know….
No matter how cute the quokkas are you CAN NOT TOUCH THEM! You also can’t feed or give them water because quokkas are wild animals, they can take care of themselves.

So this is a guide for Rottnest
so you know what to do or what you should do if you ever visit.

First, if you own a bike, take it! Unless you want to use the tour bus or walk, your bike will be your only way around the island. But if you don’t own a bike, there are plenty of bikes to rent on Rotto.
Also you should bring a bike lock, otherwise someone might steal it , and you might not ever see that poor bike again.

The most popular thing to do on Rotto is take selfies with the quokkas because there is always a happy little smile on their cute faces. The way to do it is, let it come to you, and then you can snap away! Without touching the quokka of course.

I deeply encourage you to ride to the west end, it is a long ride but it is truly amazing, and you might be lucky enough to see a seal at the lookouts at the end or maybe even dolphins or whales.
If you aren’t a strong rider don’t worry! The tour bus or the hop-on-hop-off bus will take you there, the buses cost more money though so not a great idea to catch them everywhere.

You should definitely go for a swim the water is so lovely and refreshing(the waves aren’t very big so don’t bring a surfing board or boogie board)
If you have snorkels, bring them! There are so many snorkelling spots where you can see so many fish and other things.

Out of the many beaches and snorkelling spots in my opinion the best one is the basin, It is about a 6 min ride from the centre of town to there. Also, there is a refreshment van there if you are feeling peckish for a drink , muffin or a little cup of ice cream.

For dinner, these are the places I went to and there aren’t many other places other than the following.
Pinky’s
Mez (Mexican)
The Rottnest hotel
Franky’s

I hope this guide helped you. We really loved staying there for three days and I wished I stayed longer.
