By Gabriel Olla Elisa Daniel Sahar M’hamed

Press Gang reporters, Gabriel, Olla, Elisa, Daniel, Sahar and M’hamed from the Granville South Press Gang recently interviewed Veterinarian, Dr Sanduni Jayaweera from Greencross Vets, North Parramatta.

Here are some of the highlights.

What made you become a vet?

When I was your age, I really loved animals, so I really wanted to be able to help them. But then I became a little bit older. I really liked science as well, so I loved animals and I liked science. So those two combined, equaled vet. It’s like the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be.

What do you like about animals and pets?

What I like about animals, most of the time, they’re pretty happy to see you and they’re just really sweet. They make your day. They have wagging tails, they have kitten pears. It’s really nice to come into work and see them give the best cuddles.

What pet do you like the most?

Oh, dogs! in particular, greyhounds. I have my own greayhound. He’s eight years old and I’ve had him for four years, his name is Potty. When I come home it’s really nice to see him. He’s a good boy. I can take him on walks. He’s my best bud.

What is the best thing about the vet?

The best thing about being a vet is meeting lots of new people and helping them help their pet. As much as I love pets, you also have to love people when you’re a veterinarian because unfortunately dogs and cats can’t speak, so I have to speak to their owners. So it’s really nice getting to know owners and then helping them help their pet.

Is being a vet fun?

Yes, it’s pretty fun. Sometimes it’s a bit stressful because we’re dealing with lots of difficult things and sometimes it can be sad. But the majority of the time it’s pretty fun, seeing all the puppies and the kittens and helping pets feel better.
