Reading is Magic at VPS

By Jackson, Matheus, Frankie K, Frankie B & Tom

Every year the Children’s Book Council of Australia chooses a different theme for Book Week, this year the theme was ‘Reading Is Magic’.

VPS celebrates book week in a number of ways. The main one is our Book Week costume assembly where we dress up as our favourite characters from books. This year our assembly was on Wednesday of Week 7 in the middle playground. We also have a parade at the basketball court, while students and parents sit around the edge of the playground and cheer. Each class gets to go around the circle to show off their costume. We also do art activities in library and have com- petitions. This year there was guess the book in the jar which was filled with shredded paper. Sometimes we have authors visit the school, this year they were online with Kate and Jol Temple. And of course, we also read the CBCA shortlisted books and vote for our favourite.

We interviewed VPS Library Monitors about Book Week. Here are some of their responses.

“Book Week allows people to really see the beauty of books.”

“You get to learn about new books you have never heard before.”

“Before book week Ms Caesar, our librarian, will read books to you and you get to vote which book is your

favorite.”

We asked Mrs Tainsh, the school principal about Book Week. She told us that Book Week is a really important week that we can celebrate in schools each year.

“Book Week is a way we can celebrate books, not just from the point of view of learning to read books or reading books to find out information, but just celebrating books as a joy,” she said.

So, what are some of the most popular book week costumes? Mrs Tainsh had this to say on the topic, “I’ve been to a lot of book parades at schools. I’ve done a lot of costumes, I have been Professor McGonagal from Harry Potter. And one year I dressed up as the White Witch from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I have also dressed up as a koala. That was my first year here [at VPS]”
