Book Week: Open A Book, Start An Adventure

By Evelyn & Sofia

Picture this: You’re parading around, showing off your costume. Everybody is begging you for high-fives, and you feel like a celebrity. Then you sit down and are engaged in a fabulous round of heads and tails, finding out who won the cat guessing competition and finally, who has the best costume. You’re shocked because you have been picked out of your entire year for best costume. You go and stand up in front of the whole school and feel super proud. That’s what Book Week is like here at VPS.

Book Week was invented by Franklin K. Matthews, but was properly established in Australia by the CBCA, which stands for the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

Book Week builds empathy, improves comprehension, and provides an accessible and enjoyable way for children to develop a lifelong passion for books.

We interviewed the Best Costume winners.

Roy from Year 2 came from the book King Arthur’s Court.

“My dad made the costume, but I did the design. I was a crusader. I’m super proud of my costume.’’

Alexa in Year 4 went as Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

“I’m really proud of myself. I made most of my costume except for my robes, glasses and wig.”

Emily in Kindergarten was Rapunzel for Book Week. “l was going to go as Jasmine from Aladdin, but my mum got me a Rapunzel costume, so l just rolled with it.”

And so that’s why VPS loves Book Week, and we hope that we continue to have Book Week for many years to come.
