Deadly Dancing On Aboriginal Excursion

By Nadia & Abdulraheem

On May 1st, school leaders and Koori club went on an Aboriginal excursion in Prospect Park. They took a bus to get to the destination; the drive was over 40 minutes. There were over 10 schools on the excursion.

When the students got there, they took part in lots of activities, like singing, dancing, weaponry, and throwing boomerangs. When they were singing and dancing, there was a secret word that they learned. The word was deadly, and it means that you look good.

One of the most culturally significant things in Aboriginal culture is painting. Painting is for bodies and heads in Aboriginal culture. Some paintings represent tribes in their culture and they paint themselves in dances.

On the excursion the students did some painting. They put paint on their hands and face. They also put coloured paint on their hands and pushed down on a black sheet to make hand prints.

We interviewed students to find out what they liked about the excursion.

“It was fun. We did lots of dancing, and I love dancing”

“I enjoyed learning more information, and doing the painting”

“I learned how to throw a boomerang.”
