Why are squishies so popular?

By Matteo, Freddie, Harry & Jameson

Have you heard of the colossal craze that is going around the school? We’re talking about squishies, obviously. We surveyed VPS students and found 68 per cent of us own one or more squishies and more surprisingly, 12 per cent own 20 or more!

Squishies are popular toys that fit in your hand, have a soft rubber coating and have a slimy goo filling that can be squeezed, stretched and pulled. They come in all shapes including dumplings and other food types. In addition, they’re not just food types they also come in cubes and gumdrop squishies.

Our Press Gang team interviewed several students who suggested many different ideas on why they like or dislike them.

Sophie A, a Year 5 student, explained that she and her friends like to trade their squishy toys. Luna A, from Year 3 described how they helped her chill and relax. On the other hand, Aaron Q said, “Squishies are overpriced and who could be fussed about going to look all over Sydney for them?”

According to our school survey, data showed that 68 per cent of the school owns one or more squishy toys, 32 per cent don’t own any squishies and 12 per cent have 20 or or more. That’s a lot of squishies!

Ms. Giles, a Stage 2 teacher, thinks squishies are very cute and fun to play with but suggests,

“Just remember to keep them nice and clean by giving them a little wash sometimes.” Ms Giles’ class rule is that you are welcome to have one on your desk as long as it helps you to stay focused and ready to learn. But if they start becoming too distracting in class, she adds, “we may need to take a break from bringing them to school.”
