Athletics is an international sport that consists of many events which are sprints, shot put, discus, walks, jumps, hurdles, long distances and javelin.
Here are some helpful tips.
Sprints
Sprints can be displayed as 100, 200 and 400-metre races. There are different techniques for sprints than other running events like long distances.
For shorter sprints like 100 and 200s, aim to run as fast as you can. There are many techniques to run fast, such as using your arms in a specific motion coming up against your cheek and just past your hips. There are also specific types of shoes used for these events, they are called spikes, which grip onto the track for faster starts while striking the ground harder and faster to achieve faster times.
Tip: Do not overstride (take big steps).
Shot put
To throw a shot put, there are multiple different styles used. For the less experienced person, your starting position has your shot put held against your neck and shoulder, with your other arm aiming a little bit higher than you aim to throw the shot put.
Fowls can occur if the shot put is thrown with the arm bent, instead it should be more like a ‘‘push’’ with your arm kept straight, releasing at the top of your throw. Your aiming arm will move downwards while you are releasing.*
Tip: never let your aiming arm fall down.
High Jump
One of the most popular jumps is high jump. This sport requires you to jump over a bar that will get higher as you get over the bar. In high jump spikes may also be used to get a more promising run up. To run up, more professionally most people bounce each step to get more height in their jump.
Tip: Remember to kick up your feet after jumping over the bar.
